We are proud to share that we had the honour of distributing our reading glasses to weavers in the islands of Savu and Raijua, a small regency in eastern Indonesia, for a purpose close to our hearts: to support the incredible artisans who are the keepers of a vibrant cultural heritage. The islands are known for their spectacular ikat textiles, and our mission was to provide reading glasses to the weavers, a simple act with a profound impact. This visit was more than a distribution; it was a deep dive into a world where every thread tells a story.
Located in the Lesser Sunda Islands, Savu and Raijua are places of stark, natural beauty. Their landscape of dry savannas and rugged coastlines holds a rich history and a resilient culture. The people of Savu, known for their strong community bonds and ancestral traditions, have preserved a way of life that is intimately connected to their land and beliefs. This unique culture is most visibly expressed in their exquisite textiles. The art of weaving in Savu Raijua is not merely a craft; it is a sacred practice passed down through generations. The traditional textiles, particularly the intricate ikat, are a testament to the weavers’ patience, skill, and creativity.
Our initiative to distribute reading glasses was a small gesture, but it was received with immense gratitude. We are truly grateful to our volunteer in Savu, Mrs Inapia Tededara, who has very kindly helped organise the distribution.. For many of the weavers, these glasses were a lifeline. They allowed them to see the fine details of their patterns, thread their needles, and continue their work with renewed clarity. The joy on their faces as they put on the glasses and saw their intricate designs come into focus was an unforgettable moment—a powerful reminder that a simple act of support can help preserve a priceless cultural tradition.
Our sincere gratitude to Olvira Ballo and everyone who has dedicated so much of their time to help organise this distribution.
