The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, but it also highlighted the importance of supporting local communities. In March 2022, we were proud to connect with and support skilled basket weavers of Sigapiton Village, Lake Toba, a breathtaking caldera lake in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Faced with the dual pressures of economic hardship and the need for better vision to continue their intricate craft, these artisans received a simple yet life-changing gift from Connect Indonesia: reading glasses.
The people of Lake Toba are predominantly from the Batak Toba ethnic group, known for their vibrant culture, rich oral traditions, and intricate craftsmanship. Basket weaving, a skill passed down through generations, is a significant part of their cultural heritage and a vital source of income. The weavers use natural fibres and traditional techniques to create beautiful and functional baskets, often incorporating motifs inspired by local flora and fauna
However, the detailed work of weaving requires excellent eyesight, and many older weavers were struggling with presbyopia, a common age-related condition that makes it difficult to focus on close objects. The pandemic exacerbated their difficulties, as access to eye care was limited and their financial resources were strained. The donation of reading glasses was a small gesture with a profound impact, enabling these artisans to continue their work with greater ease and precision.
We are truly grateful to Dinda Siboro, who connected us to the basket weavers and organised the gathering and helped with the distribution. We hope to continue distributing glasses to many more senior artisans in the region. Our special thanks to Olvira Ballo, who has been extremely loyal to our glasses project, devoting so much of her time to ensuring that glasses are heading to the right artisans’ group. Our sincere gratitude to everyone who has made this project sustainable to date.
